Skating Programs and Tests

skates_sm02CanSkate - Learn To Skate

All ages - 3 years and up - Girls, Boys, Teens

Our CanSkate program is the Learn to Skate program sanctioned by Skate Canada. This program teaches the "proper way" to skate through a series of levels that the skater learns at their own pace. Our small group sizes allow children to learn with confidence, while still having fun. After all levels are completed, the skater advances to our "Junior Academy" class.

Format

At the first class, skaters will be assessed and placed into a group according to their ability. Skaters continue to advance through the 7 levels at their own pace. No registration for the next level is required. Skaters are taught by NCCP coaches and program assistants. Reports are kept on all skaters and handed out to the skater when they pass a level.

We have fun days on Halloween and Xmas, as well as a big year end party for all our skaters and their families.

skates_sm02Junior Development

This class is an introduction to figure skating. Skaters learn the beginning steps to jumps and spins in small groups. Off ice classes help to improve flexibility and strength, and help to prevent injuries. Skaters can also start on Preliminary skills and dance. Upon completion, skaters begin lessons with a private coach.

Hockey02Power Skating           New in 2010 September!

CanPowerSkate is an action-packed, high energy instructional power skating program geared to hockey and ringette skaters that focuses on balance, power, agility, speed and endurance. Skills, techniques and conditioning drills are taught in a progressive format that emphasizes how the skills apply to game situations. CanPowerSkate provides an alternative to figure skating and is an excellent complement for those athletes playing on hockey or ringette teams.

CanPowerSkate is geared to skaters aged approximately six or older who already have basic forward and backward skating skills (they must be able to skate the length of the rink using alternate strides) and are able to stop on command without use of the boards

BFSC’s Power Skating program is a modified version of Skate Canada’s CanPowerSkate curriculum. Participants need to finish CanSkate level 4 in order to register. Skaters’ age group are approximately between six and twelve. For safety reasons participants should wear CSA approved hockey helmet.

skates_sm02Private Skater

Once a skater has completed our Junior Academy class, they may start taking lessons with a Coach. Our Club teams our skaters to Coaches who offer lessons with children of similar age, ability, and coaching needs. Our Coaches offer private and group lessons, teaching dance, skills, spins, and freeskate.

Once the skater has a Coach, parents and skaters meet with the Coach and discuss the days and times the skater wishes to skate, and the number and type of lessons the Coach is able to provide.

Parents are responsible for paying for ice fees, registration fees, and coaching fees. Coaching fees are charged in increments of time - generally 15/20/ or 30 minute lessons - which can be group or private. Group lesson costs are split amongst however many skaters are in the group. Private lessons are billed to the individual skater. Coaches will inform you what their lesson rates are. These rates are based on the individual coaches experience as a past skater, experience and years teaching, and coaching level (education) they have obtained with Skate Canada. Rates range between $9.00 - $15.00 for a 15 minute lesson.

We accept students who would like to skate with our club that have done municipal or school skating, skaters transferring from another club, and new skaters that would like to join our club. Skaters will be assessed on ice by one of our coaches to help find the right coach for each skater. Email info@burnabyfigureskatingclub.ca to set up an appointment.
